YouTube Set Up Best Practices for Artists

YouTube Set up Best Practices for Artists

YouTube is a fantastic platform for discovery, and if you set it up correctly it can make all the difference to amplifying your reach and impact. Here’s what you should do before sending fans to your channel:

Channel Optimisations are KEY

  1. Name & Artwork: Keep your username simple and consistent with your artist name and other platforms. Your profile pic should be high-quality and visually appealing and on brand.
  2. Banner Image: This is prime real estate! Use it to showcase upcoming gigs, new releases, or a strong visual that represents your music.
  3. Links: Don't forget to add all the links to your other social media accounts, website, and music streaming platforms.
  4. Your About Section: Write a compelling bio that tells your story and includes relevant keywords, think about your bios on your IG and Spotify and tailor it accordingly. Whether you keep them consistent across platforms or add subtle variations, ensure the core message remains the same – who you are as an artist and what you bring to the music scene.

Content Strategy: More than just music videos

  1. Upload a diverse mix of content: official music videos, captivating live performances, lyric videos that fans can sing along to, and even vlogs that offer a glimpse into your world. But don't just upload and forget - weave your videos into a cohesive tapestry. Organise them into playlists that guide viewers on a journey through your artistry and don't underestimate the power of Shorts - short form videos can be a fantastic way to grab attention and drive traffic to your longer content.
  2. Consistency! Aim for a regular upload schedule to keep your audience engaged. (make sure to keep in mind your TikTok and IG strategies as well).
  3. Categorise your content by adding playlists: Organise your content into playlists to make it easy for viewers to find what they're looking for.
  4. Video Watermarks: You can encourage viewers to subscribe to your channel by adding a video watermark to your video.
  5. Make your latest or greatest music video the featured video.
  6. Make your videos more interactive with “Cards”

Engage with your fans

  1. Show your appreciation for your fans by replying to their comments and questions.
  2. In the Community Tab, use polls, questions, and images to interact with your audience.
  3. Collaborate with other artists to reach new fans.

Optimise for “Search”

  1. Optimise your existing content: Use relevant keywords in your video titles, descriptions, and tags to enhance the fan experience.
  2. Add closed captions to your videos to make them accessible to a wider audience and improve search rankings.
  3. Use  “end screens” to promote other videos, encourage viewers to subscribe, and more.

Promote your Channel!

  1. Share your videos on all your core social media platforms.
  2. Embed your videos on your websites and blogs
  3. Participate in relevant online communities and forums.
