How To: Post Consistently on Social Media as a Musician

Keeping up with social media can feel like a full-time job. In fact, posting consistently on socials is one of the biggest bugbears that artists we work with tell us about.

And we get it – we know you’d rather be onstage with your instrument of choice in hand or behind the decks than spell-checking a post. The good news is that building a following on social media doesn’t have to be as difficult as many think it is.

TL;DR? The secret to consistent social media posting is planning ahead and building a library of content so you’re always ready to go, even if you don’t have much downtime to post…or nothing particularly interesting is going on!

If that sounds a little daunting, we’ve got some quick tips to help you stay ahead of the game and keep your feeds active without all the stress.

1. Batch Create Content

This is an obvious one, but it’s worth highlighting anyway. Setting aside some time each day, week, or month to focus on content creation will help you build a backlog. Plus, it encourages you to get in the zone without other tasks disturbing you.

Whether you’re taking photos in the studio and shooting BTS video (be sure to have a few outfit changes to hand for variety!), or writing captions and compiling hashtags, batching is a great way to help you maximize your creative energy.

Pro Tip: Tools like Canva and CapCut are really useful for creating quick graphics or editing short-form videos for future TikTok and Instagram posts.

2. Reuse and Repurpose

Not every post needs to be completely unique – odds are, except for the occasional superfan, no-one will see every single piece of content you’re posting anyway. Think about ways to repurpose your content across platforms, maybe adding a new twist.

A video snippet from a recent live performance, for example, could double as a YouTube Short or a teaser for an upcoming vlog. And today’s behind-the-scenes photo from the studio can always become a future Throwback Thursday…

Pro Tip: Dice up longer YouTube videos into clips for Instagram Reels or TikTok.

3. Plan Around Your Calendar

Whether we’re talking the old-school diary you keep on your desk or a shared band Google Calendar, be sure to mark key dates like album or single releases, tours, and planned holidays during which someone else might need to pick up the slack.

Creating content tied to big moments is a no-brainer, but it also gives you advance notice on when to schedule posts for days you know you’ll be too busy to pick up your phone. Planning in advance ensures you’re never scrambling for ideas.

Pro Tip: Consider using a separate calendar, or custom colours, to map out posts.

4. Stockpile "Evergreen" Content

Like the trees it shares its name with, evergreen content is timeless because it remains relevant long after it has been posted. Think photos from your first ever gig, videos about your creative process, or “meet the band member” posts.

Having a stash of these at the ready is an easy way to fill gaps when you’re filled with dread about not posting for weeks but are too busy to create new content. A stash of evergreen content in Drafts is a valuable tool in any musician’s arsenal.

Pro Tip: Consider saving evergreen content in a collaborative folder or in the cloud, as some apps store drafts on your phone…which is not ideal if you lose it!

5. Stay Spontaneous (When You Can)‍

In recent years, Instagram has placed more and more emphasis on staying active with Stories and TikTok followed suit a while back by adding a similar feature. It’s clear that tech brands are eager for people to post real-time content on the fly.

Although planning is key, there’s still plenty of room for off-the-cuff moments. Your fans follow you on socials because they want to see the real you, bloopers and all, since that’s what made them fall in love with the people behind the music in the first place.

Pro Tip: Strike a balance by using Instagram Stories for real-time updates and keeping main feed posts for more polished content you’re really proud of.

Whether you’re suffering from social media fatigue or find yourself going too long without posting, we hope the tips above will help to enhance your posting game. Because the power of posting regularly on socials should not be underestimated.

The more content you have in the bag, the more you’ll free up your time and reduce the pressure to create content on the daily. Start planning ahead and you’ll be amazed by how much calmer you feel about keeping the feeds active.
